Among the demons faced by the goddess across the Devi Mahatmya, Raktabija stands out less for his individual strength than for a single, uniquely disruptive boon that turned ordinary combat against him into a losing proposition for anyone fighting conventionally.
A boon that made wounding him worse than useless
Raktabija had received a blessing ensuring that any drop of his blood spilled onto the earth would instantly give rise to a new demon, identical to him in strength and form. In practice, this meant that every sword strike, every wound inflicted by the gods or the goddess’s forces, only multiplied the problem rather than solving it – the battlefield filling faster with each passing exchange.
An army generated by the very act of fighting it
As the battle against him escalated, the goddess’s own forces found themselves increasingly overwhelmed, not by Raktabija’s own strength directly, but by the sheer accumulating mass of his blood-born duplicates, each one as dangerous as the original and multiplying further with every subsequent wound inflicted on any of them.
Kali’s solution – stopping the blood before it lands
The resolution came through Kali, manifesting from Durga’s fury specifically to address this problem, who solved it not through greater force but through a change in method entirely: she began drinking Raktabija’s blood directly from his wounds before it could touch the ground, denying it the chance to spawn any further duplicates. With his blood no longer reaching the earth, Raktabija could finally be weakened and killed conventionally, and the endlessly self-replicating army collapsed along with him.
