Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namaha — Om, and salutations to the great Lakshmi, invoked through her seed syllable, “Shreem.”
Lakshmi is prosperity’s own name in Hindu tradition — not merely money, but the wider sense of abundance, auspiciousness, and flourishing that money is only one visible sign of. She rose from the churning of the cosmic ocean, seated on a lotus, and famously does not stay where she is not respected; tradition holds that a home marked by cleanliness, honesty, and generosity draws her presence, while one marked by neglect, deceit, or greed drives her away regardless of how much wealth currently sits inside it.
“Shreem” is her bija mantra, the seed sound tradition assigns specifically to invoking abundance and grace, distinct from the sounds used for other deities. Reciting her full name alongside it is meant to call not just wealth in the narrow sense, but the wider fertility of good fortune — health, harmonious relationships, and a general sense of things going well.
When it’s said: Traditionally on Fridays, considered Lakshmi’s day, and especially during Diwali, when she is welcomed into homes freshly cleaned and lit specifically for her arrival. Also before starting a new venture, job, or major financial decision.
