Among the more unusual demon-origin stories tied directly to Shiva is that of Andhakasura, whose birth resulted from an incident involving Parvati playfully covering Shiva’s eyes – and whose later actions forced Shiva into one of his fiercest confrontations.
An origin rooted in darkness
In one telling, when Parvati covered Shiva’s eyes in play, the resulting darkness across the universe caused a drop of sweat to fall from Shiva, which combined with dust to produce a blind child. Because of a divine curse or specific circumstances of his birth, the child, Andhaka, was given to the asura king Hiranyaksha to raise, growing up with no knowledge of his true origin.
Power gained, restraint lost
Andhaka performed severe austerities and received powerful boons, becoming a formidable ruler in his own right – but with his growing power came growing arrogance, eventually leading him to develop an obsessive desire to possess Parvati for himself, unaware she was, in effect, connected to his own origin.
A battle that ended in recognition, not just defeat
Shiva confronted Andhaka to protect Parvati, and after a fierce and lengthy battle, ultimately transformed him rather than simply destroying him – in several versions, Andhaka is blessed, his blindness (both literal and moral) lifted, and he is accepted as one of Shiva’s ganas. The story functions as one of several in Shiva’s mythology where destruction is paired with restoration rather than serving as a final act on its own.
