The Nine-Planet Prayer Said Before Anything Important Begins

The Navagraha — the nine celestial influences of Hindu astrology — are Surya (the Sun), Chandra (the Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru or Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and the two shadow points Rahu and Ketu. Together they’re believed to shape the timing and texture of a person’s life in ways an individual birth chart, or kundali, maps out in detail.

The Navagraha Stotram is a devotional hymn addressing all nine directly, requesting their combined favor or, at minimum, the pacification of whichever among them is currently causing difficulty. Unlike mantras devoted to a single deity, this one is explicitly plural in its address — an acknowledgment that a person’s circumstances are rarely traceable to one single cause, and that harmony requires attending to the whole configuration rather than isolating a single culprit.

When it’s said: Traditionally before weddings, housewarmings, the start of a new business, or any major life event where families consult an astrologer beforehand. Also during specific pujas dedicated to individual planets — Shani Puja on Saturdays, for instance — when someone is experiencing a particularly difficult transit and wants active intervention rather than passive endurance.
