Om Kuberaya Namaha — Om, salutations to Kubera.
Kubera holds a curious position in Hindu tradition: he is the treasurer of the gods, the guardian of the north, and the lord of wealth and yakshas — but unlike Lakshmi, whose domain is wealth in its widest, most auspicious sense, Kubera’s association is more specifically with accumulated riches, treasuries, and the literal safeguarding of stored resources. Where Lakshmi represents the flow and grace of prosperity arriving, Kubera represents the discipline of keeping and protecting what has already arrived.
In many trading communities, Kubera is invoked alongside Lakshmi and Ganesh rather than instead of them, forming a trio addressing three different aspects of the same concern: Ganesh clearing obstacles at the very start, Lakshmi inviting abundance in, and Kubera ensuring what arrives is properly guarded rather than carelessly lost.
When it’s said: At the opening of a new shop or business ledger, the start of a financial year, before counting or storing significant sums, and by traders and merchants at the start of a working day.
