Om Sham Shanaischaraya Namaha — Om, and salutations to Shani, invoked through his seed syllable, “Sham.”
Shani, the planet Saturn personified, holds a reputation in Hindu astrology unlike almost any other celestial figure — associated with delay, hardship, discipline, and the consequences of past action finally arriving due. But tradition is equally insistent that Shani is not malicious — he is scrupulously just, rewarding disciplined effort and honest conduct even as he tests both severely.
This particular mantra isn’t a request to be spared Shani’s attention entirely, but an appeal for his justice to be tempered with mercy, and for the difficult period he oversees to pass with lessons intact rather than unnecessary suffering added on top.
When it’s said: Especially on Saturdays, his associated day, during Sade Sati or other difficult planetary transits identified by an astrologer, and by anyone going through a prolonged stretch of hardship who wants to approach that hardship as instructive rather than purely punishing.
